This crawlspace in Utica was contributing to poor home performance due to exposed dirt floors, high humidity, and failing fiberglass insulation. Open vents and unprotected surfaces allowed moisture and outside air to enter freely, leading to cold floors, drafts, and increased energy costs. The existing insulation had become ineffective and unsanitary, making it necessary to fully reset the space for a proper solution.

We began by removing all fiberglass insulation and clearing out debris, including cinderblocks, to prepare for encapsulation. The system installation started with drainage matting to create a moisture barrier and thermal break, followed by TerraBlock™ foam insulation across the floor. A heavy-duty CleanSpace™ liner was then installed and sealed across the floor and up the walls to lock out moisture and improve air quality. To complete the upgrade, we applied 2" of closed-cell spray foam along the crawlspace walls and rim joists, sealing vents and insulating key areas to stop air infiltration.

The result is a clean, dry, and energy-efficient crawlspace that helps reduce humidity, eliminate drafts, warm the floors above, and lower overall energy costs, creating a more comfortable and healthier home year-round.

In this project, we upgraded an older gas or electric water heater that was no longer operating efficiently to a modern, energy-efficient 50-gallon Bradford White hybrid heat pump water heater. The goal was to improve overall energy performance, reduce utility costs, and provide a more reliable and sustainable hot water system for the home in Utica, NY.

We began by safely removing and disposing of the existing unit. A new dedicated 10/3 electrical circuit was then installed, running approximately 30 feet from the main panel to properly support the new system’s power requirements. The new heat pump water heater was installed and fully connected to the home’s existing hot and cold water lines, along with a condensate pump and drain line tied into an approved laundry sink or P-trap system to ensure proper drainage and operation.

The result is a high-efficiency hot water solution that delivers consistent performance while significantly reducing energy consumption. This upgrade improves comfort, lowers operating costs, and brings the home up to a more modern and efficient standard.

Crawlspace Encapsulation Upgrade Improves Comfort in Utica, NY Home

A home in Utica, NY was experiencing cold floors, high humidity, and persistent drafts caused by an unconditioned crawlspace with exposed soil, deteriorating fiberglass insulation, and uncontrolled air movement through vents and rim joists.

To correct these issues, the crawlspace was fully prepared by removing existing fiberglass batts, eliminating the inefficient, mouse infested insulation that was no longer performing effectively. Any obstructing materials, including old cinderblocks, were also removed and disposed of to allow for a clean and accessible work area.

Once cleared, the crawlspace was converted into a controlled environment. Vent openings were sealed, and a dimpled drainage matting was installed across the floor to create a moisture break and improve subfloor conditions. TerraBlock foam insulation was then added over the entire floor surface to help stabilize temperatures above.

A heavy-duty 10 mil Gold Seal liner was installed across the floor and up the walls, mechanically fastened and sealed to create a continuous vapor and moisture barrier. This system also incorporates UltraFresh antimicrobial protection to support a cleaner crawlspace environment.

To further strengthen performance, 2 inches of closed-cell spray foam was applied along the crawlspace walls, sill plate, and rim joists, sealing major air leakage points and separating the home from outside temperature and humidity conditions.

The result is significantly lower humidity levels, warmer and more consistent floor temperatures, reduced drafts throughout the home, and improved overall comfort with reduced energy loss.
